about

During a power outage in the afternoon, I couldn't work, I couldn't mix, so I grabbed my guitar and improvised some licks. It made me realize how much we rely on electricity. In the lyrics, Jean speaks of a blackout both in the literal and figurative sense. Trespassing Canadian landscapes the narrator goes through a metaphorical journey.

lyrics

The light went out in my apartment
I walked down a crooked road
Yes the light went out in my apartment
I cracked up and walked a crooked road
There’s no more light to guide me
Nothing left but a broken soul

Stopped in at my old workplace
But there’s no work left to do
I walked its darkened hallways
They said go home, there’s nothing more to do
We haven’t any money
The light’s broken our soul too

So I went to find my mum and father
I had to walk 500 K
I walked the highway to the mountains
My phone gave out before Hell’s Gate
The highway laid in ashes
Fires chased me on my way

Traded favours for a lift down
In a rusted Chevrolet
Came down into the rain shadow
Their trailer park beside the lake
But by the time we arrived there
A flood had swept them all away

I bid Chevrolet goodbye then
I walked all night and hiked all day
Wandered east amid the gunfire
Through the Prairies, the Great Lakes
I paddled to the sea then
The river carried me away

Now the starry skies are getting blacker
The waves are heaving in the cold
The distant light of city ruins
They flicker as the blackouts roll
They’re gonna burn the whole damn world down
Ain’t gonna spare my crooked soul
